Edith Wilson: A Legacy of Art and Community

Schedule: Exhibition Dates: Friday, March 13 – Saturday, April 18, 2026 Opening Reception: Friday, March 13, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM Location: Knox Gallery at the Monterey Library

Description: Edith Wilson: A Legacy of Art and Community is a special exhibition celebrating the technical mastery and civic heart of one of Monterey’s most influential figures. Edith Lavinia Wilson (1913–1995) was a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago who made Monterey her home in 1942. A true polymath, her creative output spanned painting, sculpture, and architecture.

This show highlights her oil paintings—many of which usually hang in Town Hall—that capture the quiet strength of the local landscape. Beyond her art, the exhibition honors her role as a community builder. Edith designed the Monterey Town Seal and served on numerous town boards, eventually bequeathing her farmhouse and 28 acres of land to the town, which led to the creation of the Monterey Community Center (the Wilson-McLaughlin House).

We invite the community to join us for an opening reception on Friday, March 13, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM to celebrate a benefactor who shaped the town of Monterey with her hands, her mind, and her heart.
